The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) has been recognised by London-based ‘fDi Magazine’ for its groundbreaking and creative investment-promotion techniques in ‘Diaspora Initiatives’ in the magazine’s inaugural Invest-ment Promotion Agency (IPA) Innovation Award 2013.
The award was given, based on the national trade and investment agency’s partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, on the fifth Biennial Diaspora Conference, which was held in June of this year, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. JAMPRO’s involvement in the conference focused on engaging the diaspora in discussions on trade and investment opportunities in Jamaica, and showcased the business opportunities available to them and other investors.
During the three-day conference, JAMPRO organised more than 200 business matchmaking sessions between diaspora investors and project owners seeking investments, through partnership or venture capital.
Investors who participated in the Diaspora Conference have indicated their interest in making equity investments in local projects.
According to a press statement by fDi Magazine, the IPA Innovation Award seeks to identify entities that stand out from the crowd in the highly competitive and increasingly challenging area of investment promotion.
“The aim [of the IPA Innovation Award] was to identify those entities that offer more than just a ‘one-stop shop’ for FDI services. We received 55 submissions. This information was then considered by fDi’s editorial team,” the press statement read.
JAMPRO is the only Caribbean-based IPA to win an award and shares the recognition with ConnectIreland/IDA Ireland’s ‘Succeed in Ireland’ initiative.
This is the second time that the work of JAMPRO has been recognised by fDi Magazine. Earlier this year, JAMPRO-landed Sutherland Global Services (SGS) investment, a global Business Process Outsourcing company was recognised as one of the top foreign direct investment projects of 2012, an honour that has earned it a joint runner-up award in the ‘Best Outsourcing Project’ global category.
