The Jamaican delegation in London last week for the FPC Annual Dinnerheaded by Hon. Derrick Kellier, minister for agriculture visitedGeest Line in Southampton on 11 February to discuss fresh-produce shipping options for increasing exports.

Captain Peter Dixon, managing director of Geest Line welcomed the delegation which also included Donovan Stanberry the minister’s permanent secretary, executive assistant Natalie Johnson, Laurence Jonesof promotional body JAMPRO‘s London office, Derrick Deslandes Jamaican fresh-produce marketing consultant to the ministry and Beverly Johnson, md of JLB (International) Shipping.

Dixon said: “We were very pleased to welcome the minister and his delegation and we had a very positive meeting. We believe it should now be possible to start a reefer-container feeder service from Jamaica to theDominican Republic to link it with our regular service from Manzanillo toPortsmouth. This would drastically cut down on current 18-21 day shipping times from Jamaica to the UK to just 12 days.”

The service would be suitable for reefer containers of fresh fruit and also for dried processed goods from Jamaica.
