Jamaica announces strengthening trade ties with Cuba

HAVANA: The Jamaican government announced the strengthening of trade relations with Cuba and Costa Rica through a pair of bilateral accords.
The agreements emerged after a delegation of Jamaican officials and business leaders traveled to the two countries, the minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Anthony Hylton, said in a statement.
Hylton said he has invited Cuba’s Trade and Investment Minister, Rodrigo Malmierca, to visit Jamaica in September for further discussions.
Havana and Kingston are aiming to develop a “framework agreement” between Jamaica’s Special Economic Zone and Cuba’s Mariel Special Economic Development Zone, the minister said.
Hylton said his visit to Costa Rica early this month with a five-member delegation included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to supplement the existing free trade pact between the Central American nation and the Caribbean Community.
“The MoU symbolizes the partnership between Jamaica and Costa Rica. It will enhance existing ties and provide an opportunity for more cooperation in trade administration as well as exchange of valuable trading information,” Hylton said.
