The University of the West Indies (UWI) and Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) in association with Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA) will host the 2nd State of the Music Symposium for a process of reflections, making recommendations, while engaging Jamaica’s growing music business. It takes place at the Jamaica Promotions (JAMPRO) Business Auditorium in Kingston, Jamaica, Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, starting at noon both days.

One of the major criticisms is that not enough research is being done on our creative economy and there is little information available on Jamaican music in particular. Therefore, the symposium is aimed at identifying and filling gaps in research to ensure availability of valuable data on the business of music in Jamaica. The Symposium is designed to capture information and create a working document within a 90 day period for consideration by members of the fraternity. Conceptualized as an annual two-day event, to close the Reggae Month calendar for reflection, visioning and forecasting, the State of the Music Symposium is also intended to bring academics, creative workers, as well as the private and public sectors to the same table.

The key discussions will focus on the markets, major players and partners who are significant in growing the music industry. Among the topics to be discussed are the state of music education; music market share and sales; Kingston as a creative city; the rise and fall of studios; the changing business models; the state of music and film; and other key areas. Speakers include industry insiders and researchers such as Hon. Minister Damion Crawford (MOTE), Keith Nurse (UWI), Diane Edwards (JAMPRO), Ray Hitchins (UWI), Ibo Cooper (EMCVPA/JARIA), Herbie Miller (Jamaica Music Museum), Carlette DeLeon (Headline Entertainment), Michael Sean Harris (EMCVPA), Sonjah Stanley Niaah (UWI), among others.
