JAMNESIA — a film which explores the little-known story of surfing in Jamaica, its history, developments, challenges and accomplishments — went home with two awards at the Jamaica Film Festival at Courtleigh Auditorium on Saturday.
The piece by Horane Henry and produced by Ikon Media won the audience Award for Best Documentary, as well the jury award for Best Documentary Short.
Jason Sawyers of Ikon Media, who accepted the awards, said although the award was unexpected, he was truly thankful to the Jamaica Film Festival for putting together an event of this nature to showcase the work of local filmmakers.
Proscenuim, which was shot inside the historic Ward Theatre in downtown Kingston and directed by Allison Harrison, copped the second public vote for Best Narrative Short.
Other winners were Legends of Ska by Brad Klein which won Best Documentary and Ann Marie Bryan The Shattered Mind which took home the award for Best Narrative Short.
Diary of a Bad Man by London-born American-based director Diemiruaye Deniran took the award for Best Narrative Feature.
Anthony Hylton — minister of industry, investment and commerce — used the opportunity to call for the establishment of a film guild to build stake holder capacity in our local film industry.
He said legislative framework is being put in place to develop the creative economy and called on the private sector, including financiers to join hands to make the partnership worthwhile.
