(Kingston, Jamaica) Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) engaged a 15-member Chinese delegation from the province of Shandong along with other invited Jamaican stakeholders in a business match-making discussion, held at the JAMPRO Office on April 18th, 2023.
The Chinese delegation was led by Ms. Chen Baiwei, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shandong with support from His Excellency Mr. Chen Daojiang, Ambassador of China to Jamaica. The delegation is the largest one from Shandong to visit Jamaica and included state-owned companies in the areas of Agriculture, Logistics, Education, Technology and Foreign Policy. Ms. Chen Baiwei indicated that with a population of 100 million, an economic output of over US$1 trillion, Shandong is one of China’s economic powerhouses and is ranked third among the provinces in China.
The Chinese delegates were given the opportunity to make presentations to the Jamaican entities present, which included JAMPRO, The Jamaica Special Economic Zone Authority (JSEZA), Ministry of Agriculture, Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), the Jamaica Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (JMEA), and Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ). Gabriel Heron, Vice President Marketing, JAMPRO, outlined that “It is through these initiatives that the groundwork is laid for mutually beneficial development opportunities for both Jamaica and China”.
The six (6) Chinese companies gave an overview of their operations and outlined the partnership possibilities with Jamaica, while JAMPRO, FCJ and the JSEZA presented on the various investment opportunities in Jamaica. This exploration of business opportunities amplified the sentiments of H.E. Ambassador Chen Daojiang, Ambassador of China to Jamaica, as he stated during the event that “China is ready to work with Jamaica to write a new chapter of shared development and make new breakthroughs in our practical cooperation”.
